BECOMING A FREEMASON
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Freemasonry?
The United Grand Lodge of England, administers Lodges of Freemasons in England and Wales and in many places overseas.
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. It is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values.
Freemasonry means different things to each of those who join. For some, it’s about making new friends and acquaintances. For others it’s about being able to help deserving causes, making a contribution to family and society. But for most, it is an enjoyable hobby
What do they do?
Lodge members are taught Masonic principles through a series of ritual dramas which are learnt by heart and performed within each Lodge. They follow ancient forms, and use stonemasons’ customs and tools as allegorical guides.
Freemasonry instils in its members a moral and ethical approach to life: its values are based on integrity, kindness, honesty and fairness. Members are urged to regard the interests of the family as paramount but, importantly, Freemasonry also teaches concern for people, care for the less fortunate and help for those in need
Who can become a freemason?
Men aged 21years or above (18 in special circumstances) who are of good character, who are community conscious, wish to contribute to the aid of others, have high moral standing and respect for others.
Members are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry.
Can a person be a member of more than one Freemasons Lodge?
There is no restriction on the number of Masonic Lodges a person can join, providing the Lodge is recognised by the United Grand Lodge of England.
What does it cost?
There is an initial joining fee and expenses relating to the purchase of Masonic Regalia. There are also annual subscriptions for membership of any Lodge you join.
